Curnow enters World Final in Bahrain for F1 test drive (10 Oct 05)

Ross Curnow has announced that he is to race in the Formula BMW World Final which is being held between 13th and 16th December 2005 in Bahrain.

Formula BMW championships are held in 14 countries on three continents with 87 drivers from 31 nations competing against each other. This inaugural World Final now gives drivers in the Formula BMW UK Championship their first chance to pit themselves against the best in the world in the category.

The Bahrain International Circuit south of the capital Manama is the most modern race track in the Middle East and hosted the first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix in the region in 2004. That event was applauded for its state-of-the art facilities, its professional organization and the high quality of the track in terms of safety and overtaking opportunities. “Bahrain in the ideal venue for the first Formula BMW World Final,” says BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen. “Even in December, the Gulf region affords good weather conditions for high-calibre motor racing. Motor racing fans can look forward to a real treat.”

Over four days, the young drivers will be vying for the accolade of being declared the fastest Formula BMW driver in the world. The total prize fund is US$60,000 and the winner will also get the chance of a Formula 1 test drive.

Following approaches from a number of teams, Ross has chosen to run with Nexa Racing. “They’ve won the UK Drivers’ Championship and come second in the Team Championship and I have a great respect for Andy Kidby and his people,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to working with them.”

Sponsorship for the event is now an important issue for Ross who is looking for business partners who would like to be involved. High quality hospitality facilities will be available as well as a display area and a wide range of attractions for corporate guests and their families. TV coverage is expected in the UK, Asia, Germany and the USA and reports will be distributed through a global news distribution network. Print media interest is anticipated from almost 70 publications in the Middle East as well as the leading motorsport journals in the UK. A 12 page glossy brochure about the event will be distributed globally through Autosport magazine and will be available to business partners.
