Ross Curnow
accepted for the 'fastest classroom on earth' (7 Nov 03)
This
is how BMW describes its two day training to be held in Valencia
in December for those wishing to compete in the 2004 Formula BMW
UK Championship. They recognise that young guns moving from karts
to single seater motor racing have much to learn if the switch
is to be successful.
Today's
promising stars have to get to grips with a much smaller field
of vision than they are used to and master the mechanical and
aerodynamic set up of their car for each circuit. Physical fitness
through sensible training and a healthy diet are gaining in importance.
Communications are becoming more international and an ability
to converse in the correct motor sport technology is crucial.
A capacity to understand the media is also a prerequisite while
the right skills to find and nurture business partners are essential
in a sport that demands financial investment.
All
these components feature in the curriculum and drivers can attend
modules on vehicle dynamics, driving technique, regulations, sports
management, sponsorship, media training and public speaking. Some
of these will be organised in conjunction with the BMW Williams
Formula 1 team.
Those
selected for this training will also be evaluated for the chance
to compete in the championship as a BMW Junior. Their cars will
run in BMW Williams Formula 1 colours to which advertisers' and
sponsors' decals can be added.
Hearing
that he had been accepted, Ross said "I'm thrilled - this
is a great opportunity for me. I am really looking forward to
taking part in this training - and of course to driving a Formula
BMW!"
