Curnow scoops sports award again (26 Feb 04)

Almost 400 people were at City Hall, Salisbury last week for the Salisbury Journal Sports Awards 2003. The 2003 poll attracted more than 6,000 votes, a response which Mike Turner, The Journal’s sports editor who co-hosted the event, described as “a testament to how proud the area is of the achievements of its talented sportsmen and women.”

Karting champion turned motor racer Ross Curnow was named Young Sportsman of the Year for the second year running. The award capped a remarkable day for the 16-year-old who is about to embark on his first season as a Formula BMW single-seater driver. That afternoon, he had achieved a startling result at Thruxton in his first Formula BMW official test session (see separate story).

Curnow’s success during 2003 has made a big impact on local people. A letter to The Journal from HJ Crosse who was at Thruxton watching the testing said:

‘This performance alone fully justifies BMW’s decision to award him one of only five racing scholarships for this 2004 season. What impressed me most on the day, however, was the courage, professionalism, commitment and passion of a young man who takes nothing for granted, works hard and strives, above all else, consistently to give of his best in pursuit of the dreams and ambitions of both himself and his team.

‘I am saying all of this because I believe he deserves the support, encouragement and sponsorship, where possible, of the local community.

‘He possesses an extraordinary talent which, I believe, in future years will reflect on our city and on us.
