Electrical problem hits Curnow at Oulton Park (27 May 04)

Oulton Park was the scene for the 7th and 8th rounds of the Formula BMW UK Championship on 22nd and 23rd May. Qualifying on the Saturday saw Ross Curnow finishing 2nd Rookie in both sessions - 8th and 10th overall.

In Race 1, he fought his way up to 6th overall to finish behind Sam Bird who took the Rookie Class. This was Ross’s highest finish overall and was an outstanding achievement for someone in his first season of single-seaters bearing in mind the experience that exists in the rest of the field.

Race 2 saw him get a good start and he was running 6th again when the safety car was deployed following an incident involving his team-mate, Jack Goldstraw. This bunched up the field and led to some close racing in the latter part of the race which was extended by 2 laps. This did Curnow no favours since an electrical problem left him stranded on the last lap, resulting in his first non-finish of the season.

Disappointing as this was for Curnow, it produces a very exciting position at the top of the Rookie Championship with Sam Bird on 109 points and Ross on 108, ahead of Jordon Wise on 90.

This is how they will start the first of the next two rounds at Mondello Park, Dublin on 12th and 13 June. The Rookie Championship is an important goal for all three of these drivers so there is a lot to fight for. Watch for the next report!
